Witches of Macbeth

From its mesmerising first moments to the final fulfilment of the witches' prophecy, Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's darkest and most powerful tragedies - a gripping account of one man's determination to secure his ambition and pronounced destiny, the crown of Scotland, by whatever means necessary. Filmed in the famous Globe Theatre, production employs Renaissance costumes and staging.

Shakespeare’s tragic tale of murder, manipulation and witchcraft is brought to life in this contemporary production which marks both Christopher Eccleston’s RSC debut and the return of Niamh Cusack to the Company. Captured live in Stratford-upon-Avon, Polly Findlay’s dark reimagining employs elements of horror to encapsulate Macbeth’s psychological trauma through sound, lighting and illusions.

Counted among his greatest tragedies, Shakespeare’s unsettling combination of warring soldiers and ‘weird sisters’ is brought to life in this post-apocalyptic reimagining of the Scottish play. This production, directed by Gemma Bodinetz and starring David Morrissey in the title role, was captured by Digital Theatre live at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool.

This show was originally staged as part of the National Theatre’s Shakespeare for younger audiences programme. This archival recording was captured in 2017. Following a London West End run in December 2007, a sold-out limited engagement at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in March 2008, and a subsequent eight-week run on Broadway, director Rupert Goold’s gripping stage production of Shakepeare’s Macbeth was filmed for television at the end of 2009. Patrick Stewart in his triumphant, Tony-nominated performance as the ambitious general, and Tony-nominated Kate Fleetwood as his coldly scheming wife. On March 31, 2011, this Macbeth production was the proud recipient of a George Foster Peabody Award.
